FAQ
Do I use my own car for the lesson?
By law, driving lessons must be done in our certified training vehicles. Our vehicles are equipped with a brake on the instructor’s side as well as necessary training equipment that gives the instructor visibility and training tools needed to conduct a safe and effective lesson.
How long is each driving lesson?
Behind the Wheel Lessons are 1 Hour. The hour includes on-boarding at the beginning of the lesson to prepare the student as well as debriefing after the lesson to go over evaluations and questions. Once the lesson is over, we will debrief with the parent as well.
Does KY require driver education?
KY does not require Professional Behind the Wheel lessons; however, they do require a 4 hour classroom course for any student who gets their permit before the age of 18. This course can be completed in person or online. The online course is offered by Rightlane.org for $12 and can be taken at the student’s own pace. The in-person course is offered by Alive at 25 for free. You can find dates and locations for the in-person course at https://aliveat25.us/ky/find-a-course. For a full list of KY requirements, visit drive.ky.gov/Drivers/Pages/GDLP.aspx.
Do your Behind the Wheel Lessons count toward the Graduated Driver License class requirement?
No. The Graduated Driver License class is a classroom curriculum that is required by the state and behind the wheel lessons do not meet the requirement.
Do you administer the Road Test?
No. In KY, the Road Test is only administered through the KY State Police at the Regional Testing Sites.
How many lessons should I take?
Each student is different and may require more or less instruction than another student. One of the biggest determining factors is how much practice the student gets between lessons. The more practice, the better the progress. If the student doesn’t have someone to practice with, or if the parent is uncomfortable practicing with the student, it may take more lessons.
Do you do background checks on your instructors?
Yes! In order to legally offer driving lessons, an instructor has to be an employee of a Certified Driving School and they must be Certified by the KY State Police which includes a background check. NOTE: Certified Driving Instructors are also required to give instruction in a Certified Instruction Vehicle. BEWARE: There are people who illegally offer driving instruction who are NOT Certified Driving Instructors. If they are not associated with a Certified School, if they offer to do lessons in Your car, if their training car doesn’t have a topper identifying their school, if they do not have an Instructor’s License issued by the KSP (this is Different from their regular Driver’s License), then something is off. Ask ALL the questions and ask for proof. You want a background checked instructor who is legal and insured!
Do you do driving lessons in the rain?
Yes! As long as there are no extenuating circumstances that would be a safety issue, we do drive in the rain. This is an opportunity for your student to experience different driving environments before they set out to drive solo. Our instructors make necessary adjustments regarding following distance and speed for every situation. We do not drive when roads are snow covered or icy.
How long have you been in business?
Central KY Driving School has been in operation since 2020.
What qualifications do your instructors have?
Our instructors have 30+ years of combined experience as driving instructors. Even prospective instructors who come to us with previous experience go through extensive training before we have them instructing your students. We hire and retain only the best.
Do you lend your vehicles to be used for the Road Test?
No. We currently do not offer this service.
Do I have to have my permit in order to take driving lessons?
Yes. In order to be behind the wheel of any vehicle, you are required by law to have a valid instructional permit or some may call it a learner’s permit.
Do I have to have driving experience before I take driving lessons?
No, you do not have to have any experience. We have new students who have never touched a steering wheel before, so no worries.
Do you offer pick-up and drop off?
No, all driving lessons begin and end at our office. We have a curriculum that builds from skill to skill and we have developed routes that offer the right level of traffic and complexity as a student progresses. Our instructors are very familiar with the area we drive in and it allows us to put our focus on assessing and adjusting to the student’s needs rather than figuring out where to go next in an area we are less familiar with. This business model has allowed us to consistently give safe and effective instruction to every student who trains with us.
Do you offer military discounts?
Yes! Our military discount is off of our full price and can not be combined with any other promotions or discounts. If there is a promotional price that matches the services you are looking for, we are glad to apply the discount or promotion that gives you the best value.
Do you offer refunds?
Yes. If you decide to not use lessons that you have paid for, we will refund the cost minus any fees or adjustments. This may include but not be limited to late cancellations and adjustments for any promos that offer discounts for a designated number of lessons.
Do you have experience with students who are ADHD or students on the spectrum?
Yes. Many of our students come to us with various learning differences and challenges. As with every student, we assess and adjust as necessary. We approach the lessons as teamwork between student, parent and instructor. Our instructors make a point to let the parent know what we are seeing in the car and come up with a plan going forward. No matter what, students who practice have the most success. We understand that some students come to us at a starting point parents are not yet comfortable practicing with. In that case, it may take more lessons. If we recognize that your student may need additional specialized instruction, we have organizations that we can recommend.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes, we ask that changes and cancellations be done no less than 48 business hours prior to your lesson or we do apply a cancellation fee to the account.
Do you offer lessons using a manual transmission?
No. We are required to do training in our certified instruction vehicles which are all automatic transmissions. We do; however, have instructors who drive manuals as their daily drivers and we can answer questions you may have.
